    For 175 years, standing in solidarity with Christians who are facing discrimination and persecution has been at the heart of the mission of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA). In continuation of this tradition, WEA Secretary General Bishop Dr Thomas Schirrmacher joined Orthodox and other church leaders lamenting the reconversion of the Hagia Sophia Cathedral in Istanbul into a mosque, when he visited Washington, DC earlier this year.

    WEA introduces new ambassador to the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Orthodox Church community

    On the occasion of a meeting of the heads of all major churches and confessions of Turkey at the Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul, the Associate Secretary General Bishop Thomas Schirrmacher introduced Dr Nikolay (Nik) Nedelchev personally to Bartholomew I, who as Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch is the spiritual leader of 300 million Orthodox Christians worldwide.

  • Thomas Schirrmacher receives the Order of Merit from the Royal House of Ghassan for his Activities relating to Human Rights in the Middle East

    The – no longer governing – oldest royal house in the world, the Christian and Arab ruling house of The Sovereign Imperial and Royal House of Ghassan, has honored Thomas Schirrmacher with the “Magister Praetor” Order of Merit for achievements relating to the planning of a civic central council of Christians in the Near East and Middle East (Oriental Christian Council) and for promoting the House of Ghassan, specifically noting “that he [enabled] the House’s personal contact to Pope Francis and to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.”
